Higher power in the 12 steps god or higher power is mentioned in 6 of the 12 steps these terms are used interchangeably the idea of a higher power is the key element of the program as seen in the following steps step 2 we came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Most noteworthy the 12 step approach is now used by self help groups of drug users compulsive gamblers sex addicts depressives and others who feel they cannot deal with their problem behaviour without a powerful spiritual form of help belief in a higher power of the 12 steps programme. The 12 step program of alcoholics anonymous very clearly states that to achieve full recovery and to reach a state of peace we must develop a loving healthy relationship with a higher power this power must be truly greater than ourselves and must have qualities we wish to obtain. What could an atheist use as a higher power in 12 step recovery i know this wont be quite what you were looking for in an answer but i feel i need to say it the whole 12 step program idea is oversold it isnt the only way to get control over addiction and its certainly not the best. Resources how does 12 step recovery work if you asked any former or recovering addict about their treatment they would probably mention participating in some type of support group the model itself was built upon a belief in a higher power but that doesnt mean that participants need to be committed to any particular religion simply
